Don’t Tweet Me, Bro.

So, last week the SEC banned everything social media from this season’s football games. After the obvious backlash, they eased up on the prohibitions, but still plan on banning video recording at games this fall. Obviously, this is an attempt to protect their exclusive contracts with “traditional” media outlets, but in doing so they are completely failing to realize that “new” media doesn’t hinder “old” media. In fact, the new encourages people to interact with the old. Why don’t they want people to talk about their “product”? Don’t they realize that allowing (not that people need permission) fans to blog/tweet/facebook/twitpic/so on and so forth will basically accomplish what they pay the marketing team to do? Way to not understand how people consume media anymore, dudes.

That being said, there is no way to even enforce this ban. What are they going to do when there are more than 100,000 people in the stadium trying to record video of each week’s Vols game? Perhaps they will institute a mandatory electronics check at the gate. That’s sure to work.

But seriously, SEC, don’t FUCK with the babysitter internet.
